Explore Bonaire's
underwater secrets
1978-1982
Origin
Step aboard Aquaspace, a truly unique sailboat with a fascinating history and a rich legacy. Built between 1978 and 1982 by the visionary architect, sailor, and diver Jacques Rougerie, this extraordinary trimaran was originally designed as a floating aquarium. Rougerie’s passion for the sea and his deep understanding of marine life inspired the creation of Aquaspace, which became a platform for intensive marine research, especially in the vibrant waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Aquaspace wasn’t just a boat—it was an innovation. Its design allowed scientists and researchers to study marine ecosystems up close, making it an invaluable tool in oceanographic research. From its underwater observation deck, researchers could observe marine life in their natural habitat without disturbing them, offering a new and exciting perspective on ocean exploration.
1985-1995
Crossing the ocean
In 1985, Rougerie made one of his dreams come true by crossing the Atlantic Ocean with the Aquaspace. During the journey, he had a continuous view of the underwater world from the transparent underwater room, allowing him to stay connected to the ocean’s mysteries even while sailing across the vast expanse of the Atlantic.
In 1995, Aquaspace reached the island of Bonaire, where it took on a new life. From this point onward, the sailboat was used to offer unique tours, allowing tourists to experience the beauty of Bonaire’s underwater world without even getting wet. The transparent observation room gave passengers a rare and unforgettable view of marine life, making it a beloved attraction for those eager to explore the sea’s wonders.
A legacy of exploration
The Aquaspace represents a major chapter in Jacques Rougerie’s long and impressive career. A pioneer in both architecture and oceanography, Rougerie was dedicated to pushing the boundaries of design to deepen humanity’s connection with the ocean. His vision was clear: to create structures that could coexist with the marine environment and foster a greater respect for the natural world.
His designs, including Aquaspace, reflected his belief in sustainability and ecological responsibility. Rougerie’s work wasn’t just about building; it was about creating a future where humans and the ocean could live in harmony. Aquaspace embodies this vision, blending innovative architecture with a deep commitment to marine preservation.
Through his groundbreaking work, Rougerie has had a lasting impact on both architecture and oceanography. His contributions have not only advanced the field of underwater research but have also raised awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans. Aquaspace stands as a testament to his legacy, a vessel that continues to inspire awe and curiosity, inviting people to explore and understand the wonders of the deep.
Today
To restore the Aquaspace to its former glory, we have completely renovated the boat, giving it new life and returning it to its original state. Today, we use this historic sailboat to take you on one of our fantastic tours.
In September 2022, we began renovating the Aquaspace. The boat was in such poor condition that we stripped it down completely and rebuilt it.
Today, we offer amazing sailing and snorkeling trips around Bonaire and Klein Bonaire. Bonaire is a true paradise for sailing and snorkeling. We provide the most impressive and beautiful way to discover the underwater world from our unique underwater chamber. Watch the turtles, dolphins, the stunning coral reefs, and all the other fish while enjoying a drink and a luxurious lunch or BBQ on one of our tours.
